"Watch him, Thahaeth, okay? Just make sure he doesn't get into any trouble." And without another glance, Cerien's father left him beside the dragon as he went off on some business or other in the Falas Genetic Hall. The young boy stood in the shadow of his father's bond's wings as the giant (to Cerien, anyway) ruby-winged black settled down for a nap.
This wasn't anything new. Ad'ren often took his son on trips dragonback, and the boy got along well with his dragon, Thahaeth, as well. Not the least bit afraid of Thahaeth, Cerien now settled down between the dragon's forelegs to wait for his father's return.
It wasn't long, however, before the eight-turn-old child got bored of waiting, and he sighed heavily. Thahaeth snorted beside him, making Cerien jump in surprise, but the dragon had dozed off. Cerien had a rather short attention span, so he decided to get up and explore the FGPC Weyrhall before his father got back-or Thahaeth woke up.
He wandered through some of the buildings, though some people stared after him, wondering what a child was doing on his own, but nobody stopped him. Then he came to the fire lizard incubators. Obviously, someone had been negligent in locking up, because the door was cracked open just enough for Cerien to open it and slip through. He looked curiously at the various eggs in the incubators, as nobody was in this particular section to stop him.
Apparently, whoever was here had stepped away for some sort of emergency, for they had left one of the incubator doors open, where a small clutch of altered eggs had begun to rock. The young boy watched, captivated, as one of the eggs began to crack open, and a dusky purple fire lizard's head appeared. Cerien smiled and reached out to touch the hatching fire lizard as the  creature hummed happily.
He was startled, though, as stomping footsteps sounded behind him, and he turned to see a disgruntled, angry-looking geneticist behind him. "Hey! What are you doing in here?" The man demanded.
Frightened, Cerien stepped back, towards the still creeling fire lizard, who latched one of her claws onto the back of his shirt. He was rescued, as his father stepped inside as well, sighing at the sight of his son coaxing a dawn-colored fire lizard hatchling into his arms. "I-I'm sorry." Cerien stuttered. "I d-didn't mean to-"
"It's okay, Cerien." Ad'ren said.
The other man spoke up, still scowling. "Those eggs are three marks each, you know. We're not giving these away for free."
Cerien looked alarmed, until Ad'ren reached into his pocket and put three marks in the other man's hands. "Here," He said, "That should cover it." Then he turned to Cerien, who shrunk back slightly. "Come on, Cerien, and bring your flit." He said with a sigh. "Happy early birthday,  I guess."
Back already? Thahaeth asked with a yawn when he saw Ad'ren and Cerien approaching.
"Yes...great job of watching Cerien, by the way." Ad'ren said with a glare at his dragon.
Thahaeth looked a little sheepish, but replied,
Hey, I'm a dragon, not a watchwher.
Ad'ren just rolled his eyes. "Come on, let's go home." Cerien smiled, his new companion nestled his arms, now asleep.

Eight turns later...
Not much had changed in the eight years since Cerien had gotten his fire lizard, Akegata. His mother ignored him (as always), his father and Thahaeth visited occasionally, and Olalla (his foster-mother) berated him every other day for skimping out on his chores.
Once again, he was waiting with Thahaeth while his father talked with other personages at Falas Weyr. Still, he didn't mind the wait, as long he got to get away from home every now and then and see Pern. He would have died from boredom by now if he hadn't, he often mused. Akegata snoozed on Thahaeth's back, though the dragon was awake, and was presumabley conversing with Falasian dragons.
Now sixteen turns old, Cerien stretched and leaned back against Thahaeth's side, gazing up at the clouds. So he didn't notice when three people around his age approached until they were almost to him.
"Hey, nice dragon." One of them, a young girl with auburn hair, said to him with a smile. "He's pretty."
One of her friends, another girl with darker hair, eyed him shrewdly. "You must've been pretty young when you Impressed him." She said, but she sounded faintly admiring as well.
Cerien only blinked in reply. "Huh?
The first girl giggled, saying to her friend, "He must be shy."
Their other friend was a young man a couple years older than Cerien, who shook his head with a grin. "Don't mind them, they acted the same when I Impressed Tanolth."
One of the girls scowled at him. "Shut up, R'joc!"
"Oh!" The other girl exclaimed. "We need to go now. Tanolth will be hungry when he wakes up, R'joc." She said to remind her friend, then turned and waved to Cerien. "'Bye, maybe we'll see you and your dragon again?"
"But-I'm not-" Cerien stammered, blushing, but the riders (if the girls
were riders) were already gone before Cerien could explain. He heard Thahaeth coughing behind him, apparently trying to suppress a chuckle. "Thahaeth, it's not funny!" He said to the black-ruby crossly.
Don't get so worked up about it, it was just a harmless misunderstanding. Thahaeth said comfortingly.
Cerien didn't answer, just turned his head away from the dragon and sighed.
You know, if you want to Impress a dragon, it wouldn't really be that hard to arrange. You come from rider blood, after all.
"I'm back, Cerien, You ready to leave?" Ad'ren asked, appearing from inside the Weyr, then sensing something was amiss, he added. "You alright? Did something happen?"
"Nothing. Let's just go home." Cerien grumbled, leaping up to Thahaeth's back unaided. The black was still snickering silently to himself, he was sure.
"Okay..." Ad'ren let it go, still looking slightly puzzled.
Cerien continued to mull over Thahaeth's words in his mind.
Impress a dragon? He'd never shown much interest in it before, he wasn't sure what he thought about it. But, maybe it wouldn't be that bad after all...

The next time Ad'ren brought Cerien along to Falas Weyr, Cerien stayed. He'd decided to stand at the FGPC's Shimmer Frenzy, and Impress a dragon. He'd already been accepted by the searchriders, and Ad'ren was clearly proud of his son. "Good luck!" He yelled from Thahaeth, well aware that the next time he saw his son, he'd be a dragonrider.
For someone who had never shown any interest in Impressing before, Cerien was unusually nervous when the call came for the candidates to gather on the sands. He stood by himself, wiping his sweating hands on the sides of his white candidacy robe as he looked at the rocking eggs nervously. Many of them had stopped rocking already, an unusually large amount it seemed to him, until Thahaeth spoke up, The scientists expected a lot of the eggs to not hatch after being genetically altered. They also said that not all of them will probably be shimmers.
Ad'ren and his dragon were sitting in the audience to cheer him on. He wasn't sure if he was pleased that at least one of his parents had shown up for the Hatching, or scared that his father would witness him failing utterly to Impress.
Cerien's thoughts were drawn back to the eggs as the first of them broke open, revealing a bronze with a shimmering hide. He bonded quickly, followed by a female from the feathered clutch. One after another, more eggs hatched, and dragons wandered past him left and right, but so far they had all ignored him.
He was not to be disappointed for too long, though, because two dragonets were heading for him and a nearby candidate. The small gold-shimmered male sat down at his feet, looking up at Cerien's astonished face. A grin came over the candidate's face as he felt Selelth's mind in his own head, and the dragon quickly made it known that he was hungry.
"It's alright, Selelth, we'll get you some food in a bit." He told the dragon.
Selelth wasn't entirely convinced, and he arched his wings in a rather strange pout. The wingsails were black, and certainly didn't show the telltale shimmer that the rest of his body did.
Cerien blinked, reaching out with one hand to touch the black membranes, but before he could, Selelth had snapped his wings back to his side, giving his rider a cheeky look. "Okay, we're going!" The dragonet said, out loud.
Cerien grinned wryly to himself, and followed his dragon off the sands with a shake of his head.
"Where'd it come from?" Selelth asked, cocking his head to one side as he looked at the egg in his rider's hands.
C'ien sighed. "Akegata brought it back from somewhere. I know it's not hers, but she's been acting protective around it, I could barely get it away from her." He explained with a roll of his eyes.
Selelth stuck his head closer until his nose bumped against the shell. C'ien stepped backward with a yelp as the egg unexpectedly jumped in his hands. "Watch it!"
The egg wriggled in his grasp again, and a huge cracked appeared on the side. Selelth wisely went to find food, leaving C'ien alone with the hatching egg. "Oh, great." C'ien muttered. He didn't want another fire lizard.
Nevertheless, the egg hatched and revealed a tiny silver-colored flit which stared up at him with huge blue eyes. Fortunately, Selelth appeared just then with food for the hatchling; the flit opened its mouth and screeched horrendously. If C'ien had been busy holding it, he would have slapped his hands over his ears. As it was, he cringed and stuck his arms as far away from his head as he could. The flitter finally quieted as it saw the food and started gulping down the strips of meat.
Selelth rumbled a laugh. "I think Iraki would be a good name for it."
"Whatever." C'ien grumbled.
