was fanning herself with one hand, the heat of the midday sun almost unbearable,
when the call for candidates came out. Surprised and caught unawares, she
stumbled up and pulled on the candidate robe, then rushed outside to the
hatching sands. She met her younger half-brother Azahrine there, who was also
standing for the senior queen's clutch, and she smiled at him. Azahrine smiled
back nervously, shaking slightly. Then she saw the large, golden-hued queen
egg nestled between the clutchmother's claws, and she turned her attention fully
to the rocking eggs. The first egg spilled a sturdy brown dragonet onto the
sands, and he shook himself and trotted towards the candidates. He quickly
picked out his rider, to the disappointment of several of the other
boys. Dozens of eggs seemed to hatch at once after that, spilling greens and
blues and browns and one tiny white dragon onto the sands, all at once. A female
blue arched her neck as she walked over to her male rider, who announced her
name to the rest of the world. Elohu's eyes were drawn toward another egg,
which was cracking apart to reveal a green dragonet. She felt a tug on her robe,
and she looked down to see a second green dragon looking up at her. She blushed
and grinned. "Yalirienth! I'm sorry, I didn't see you!" She said. Yalirienth
crooned happily. That's alright. Can we go eat now,
Elohu? Elohu smiled and
scratched her dragon's eyeridge. "Most definitely, Yalirienth." Yalirienth
crooned in reply. |
| | Elohu...Elohu woke slowly, to see her weyrling dragon's emerald
head hovering over her. She cocked one eyebrown as she stared into Yalirienth's
whirling green eyes. She sighed. "Up already, Yalirienth?" She asked,
stifling a yawn. Yalirienth blinked. Most of the other weyrlings have left already.
She pointed out calmly.
I'm hungry, Elohu,
and my back itches. Elohu
nodded sleepily, then she sat up as the first part of her dragon's words hit
her. "What? Everyone else is already up!? Oh, I'm sorry, Yalirienth! You should
have woken me up earlier!" The green weyrling cocked her head to one side.
You were tired. I
was not that hungry, Elohu. Then her stomach rumbled, and she looked down
sheepishly. But
could we get going soon, please? Elohu smiled, reaching over to rub the green's
eyeridges. "Of course, Yalirienth. As soon as possible." Yalirienth crooned,
deep in her throat. |
