Reeka
Darkling Dawn
My Personas

Reeka stared at the Searchrider's dragon. It was black. She hadn't known that there were black dragons.
'Of course there are black dragons!' she thought. 'I have Tolenys, after all.'
Tolenys was her fire lizard. Some of the people in her father's hold thought that he was bad luck, or some such nonsense, because of his black color. Reeka didn't care, he was her fire lizard, no one else's.

Reeka listened as her father, the Lord Holder, introduced the Searchrider to her as J'ril, and his dragon as Delduwath. She nodded at him, but said nothing. The searchrider was looking for candidates for the clutch at Tiynarea Weyr. She didn't particularly care, she had never obsessed over dragons, like some of the other hold children had.
Tolenys landed on her shoulder as she left. She brushed her hair over her other shoulder as Tolenys crooned. She absently scratched his head as she wondered if the searchrider would take anyone from the hold, perhaps even one of her older brothers. At sixteen turns, Reeka was the youngest of four children, and the only daughter. Her father, coming from a line of dragonriders, was hoping that one of his children would be searched. Reeka had no interest in dragons, but her older twin brothers, Laval and Nabil, were fascinated by them. The eighteen-turn-olds were likely trying to impress the searchrider already.
Reeka had long, black hair, and light blue eyes. She took after her father in more than just her looks, because she was rather cold and distant to most people, and her father was not one of the well-liked Lords. Despite that, Reeka would do anything to please her father. When the searchrider came back that evening asking if she would like to stand as a candidate, she accepted.

Reeka watched the rocking, mottled eggs. She half hoped she wouldn't be chosen, if it wasn't for her father watching in the stands.
The first egg hatched, a brown. The next two eggs hatched, revealing a green and a blue.
She'd never liked dragons, why should she be here? Why not Laval and Nabil, at least they had wanted to get searched. But they hadn't even been there when the search rider came.
Another egg had shattered, revealing a light dappled green. Reeka was lost in thought, wanting to get this over with. She didn't notice the green, nosing her way through the rest of the girls towards her.
Reeka heard a dragon warble, and looked down into a pair of swirling, blue-green eyes. Suddenly, she realised that even if she didn't want to at first, she was now a dragonrider. And Maricth made it all worthwhile.
Reeka looked to the stands, where her father was watching. "Her name is Maricth!"

Reeka smiled as she watched her green weyrling playing in the water. "Maricth, dear, isn't it time to come out now?"
Right. Because it's time for you to feed me now! The green said, butting her head against her chosen's side.
Reeka laughed, leading her green dragon away from the lake.

What are they doing here, Reeka? Maricth asked her rider as she stared at the bronze and brown dragons and their two riders.
Reeka blinked. What
were her brothers doing here?
"Uh...You wouldn't happen to know her name, would you, Sysith?" L'val was saying as he stared at a gold dragon, obviously close to rising.
Seeing who her brother, and his bronze, were staring at, Reeka spoke up. "The gold? That's Kandrith. The woman beside her is her rider, Sarilyn. Why do you want to know?"
The twins both turned to her. L'val waved before racing off to the flight boards. " Thanks, Reeka. Bye!" He said as he raced off.
Reeka blinked, turning to her other brother, N'bil. "He and Sysith want to sign up for her flight." He explained.
She snorted. "Doesn't he realize that's a flight for Weyrleadership?"
"What!? She's...the Weyrwoman!?"
Reeka nodded as N'bil burst out laughing."Oh, he's gonna
love that!"
Reeka just shook her head. "L'val, as Weyrleader? Scary thought."
Very scary, indeed. Maricth agreed. Now why don't you feed me?
