Golden afternoon sunlight filtered through the glass window, falling on the fur of a black, white, and russet colored feline sprawled out just beneath the window. The cat flicked an ear lazily and  blinked its bright blue eyes in the sunlight. It yawned widely, revealing a long, pink tongue and tiny, pointed teeth.
The feline sat up regally, gazing at the front door, where a young girl with bright red hair loosely held in a braid had entered the house. Warm brown eyes took in the room around her, noting with disapproval the clothes tossed haphazardly over the floor and the loose sheets of paper littering the room.
Don't look at me, I've been asleep all day. Kaira made the mess. The cat had begun to clean a foreleg nonchalantly as his owner glared at him accusingly.
Relissi sighed, rolling her eyes. "I can't believe that girl's my sister. And she's older than me!" The sixteen-year-old failed to notice the smug look the feline seemed to possess. By the time she glanced at him again, the smug look had been replaced by one of perfect innocence.
Relissi sighed again before bending to pick up the mess. "I better take care of this before Grandmother sees it, or I won't leave the house for a week."
The cat watched her with a vague look of amusement, twitching the tip of his tail back and forth.
Once you finish that, there's something much more important for you to do. He reminded her.
"Oh? And what's that?"
The cat feigned an indignant look.
Feeding the cat, of course.
Relissi just rolled her eyes. "You could help, you know."
Me, help? Relissi, please, I'm a cat. The feline seemed to roll his eyes.
Relissi groaned. "At least Grandmother won't be coming back for another couple of hours." She sighed.

An hour later, she had finished all of her chores, and most importantly, had fed the cat. She was sitting by the window, stroking the cat, Mikeneko, when she saw a flash of green outside the window.
Curious, she went outside, Mikeneko following at her heels. A green dragon stood outside, crouching as her rider dismounted. The brown-haired woman looked around her for a moment, then she saw Relissi and her eyes lit up.
"Hello there!" She chirped. "We're ooking for candidates to send to the Warren. Apparently, the clutches there will hatch soon, and they don't have nearly enough candidates. Anyway, Seinkoth says you might be able to bond one."
Mikeneko purred encouragingly beside her. Relissi just ignored him. She knew he only wanted to go because he knew in a large place like that, he'd be able to get away with stealing food and shiny trinckets more often, and who knows what else besides. Sometimes she regretted being able to speak to animals.
Of course, bonding a dragon, hathian or normal, would quite make up for the antics of her cat. "I'd love to go."
The clutches of the two green Hathian dragons chose to hatch at once on a sunny, clear summer day. Relissi sat outside, stroking Mikeneko's purring head, when she heard the call for candidates. Unsure of what to do, she quickly caught sight of other candidates and followed them towards the hatching sands.
Relissi stood on the sands beside another girl, relating the hatching to the blind candidate as the first egg cracked open. The red hatchling that emerged hissed and stamped the shards of its egg into the sand before galloping toward one of the female candidates.
Two more eggs cracked, revealing two silver dragons. Relissi gasped as the first of the silvers, a female, walked towards her, and nuzzled the hand of Saorise beside her. The blind girl nodded her understanding as Relissi continued to describe the hatchling to her, then lead her Ionuin away.
Anxiously, Relissi turned back to the rest of the eggs. A green and two reds were squabbling among themselves. Finally, one of the red sisters moved away towards the phoenix Ea. The other red and the green moved towards another female candidate, and knocked their bond to the ground with their eagerness.
Two whites merged and chose male candidates, then three eggs burst open at once, spilling two blues, a red, and a green onto the sand. The first to bond was a blue, who rushed over to the boy, who'd already bonded a white, and he lead his two bonds away to be fed.
The red and green, meanwhile, had taken to chasing their other blue brother around the sands, before he took shelter behind the tall gryphon-man Skan.
With a glance at her sister, the green calmly walked forward while the red sat back on her haunches, waiting for her turn to bond. The green knew who she wanted, and went straight to Relissi, and knelt down and threw her arms around the hatchling's neck.
Mikeneko just stared at the hatchling suspiciously.
Listen here, you. He said to the Hathian. I am not food, you do not come near my food, you do not come near me. Got that?
Vobis simply stared at the cat, and jumping out of Relissi's arms, she seemed almost to purr herself as she nuzzled the much smaller feline. Mikeneko growled, but due to the hatchling's larger size and claws, put up with the indignation.
A small, female hathian dragon was locked in a heated staring contest with a large, calico colored feline. The cat twitched its russet, black, and white patterned tail back and forth repetitively, keeping its bright blue eyes locked on the green hathian's own feral violet eyes. Neither one had had moved for hours now, and they both seemed almost like statues frozen in place, only the cat's incessant twitching of its tail, and the hathian's occasional shifting and fluttering of her wing-arms shattering the illusion of the statuesque beings.
This was how Relissi found her pet cat, Mikeneko, and her green dragon, Vobis, one morning. The girl lifted one eyebrow questioningly before shaking her head, causing rusty red curls to fall over her face. She usually kept it in a braid, but had neglected to do so this morning, so her red hair currently fell down her back in wavy lengths, at least when it wasn't falling over her face, anyway.
She cocked her head to one side as she stared at the odd duo. "What are you two doing?" She asked.
Mikeneko looked up at her, breaking the eye contact. Vobis sat back with a happy bugle.
Ha ha, I win!
The feline hissed at her.
Shut up, you. Besides, it doesn't count, outside interference.
Vobis growled furiously at the cat.
Does so. But Mikeneko was now ignoring her, licking a forepaw nonchalently.
Relissi sometimes wondered why those two always seemed to be at each other's throats, then she wondered how Vobis could hear Mikeneko at all, and shook her head. Perhaps she had picked up her rider's talent to talk to animals.
Ooh! Relissi, now that you're here, I wanted to ask you something. The green hathian turned back to her rider.
Relissi shrugged. "Sure, what is it?"
Don't agree to anything before you know what it is. Mikeneko advised her, but Vobis swatted the cat away with her tail before continueing.
I was hoping we could stay here for a while longer. Vobis pleaded.
Relissi's eyebrows furrowed. "How long?"
Oh, a couple months or so...The green said evasively.
Relissi blinked, taken aback. "Why?"
Mikeneko spoke up, sniggering.
She wants to mate, that's why.
The hathian's angered shrieks only proved the cat's point all the more, and he began to groom himself smugly, the large, hissing dragon seeming not to bother him at all.
Relissi hesitated, unsure. "Already?" She knew her dragon would want to mate eventually, but she hadn't realized it would be so soon...Vobis was barely three years old, just an adult in hathian terms.
But she would not deny her dragon the right to have a mate, which Vobis knew well, so she really didn't have much choice in the matter. "Alright then." She said, causing Vobis to croon happily, and Mikeneko to hiss in distaste. The cat was ignored, and Relissi cocked her head to one side. "Vobis, are you looking for a lifetime mate, or just...well..."
A one night fling? Mikeneko suggested dryly, causing Relissi and Vobis to glare at him.
"Well, yes, in a word..." Relissi said, glancing away from the cat.
The green dragon cocked her head thoughtfully.
I'm not sure. I suppose either would be fine. If they want to stay with me, I wouldn't mind, but if they don't, I wouldn't really mind that either.
Relissi nodded in answer, silent. She only hoped their riders would be as satisfactory as the dragons would be...
