Hatchlings
Falas Weyr
Adren stood on the deck of a
ship, looking out at the ocean and the quickly disappearing shape of Falas, now
shrouded in mists for an undeterminable length of time. He sighed and looked
down to the wooden railing that he was clutching tightly. His knuckles were
turning white.
Something butted up against his side, and he looked down,
smiling at the tiny black hatchling with ruby wings. What's wrong, Adren? Thahaeth asked worriedly as his eyes whorled
yellow.
Adren grinned down reassuringly at his dragon and scratched the
hatchling behind the eyeridges. Thahaeth crooned in pleasure. "It's nothing,
Thahaeth. Just...thinking."
Thahaeth butted his head against the boy's side
again. It'll be
okay, mine. We're together, that's all that matters.
Adren smiled. "Of course, Thahaeth."
The
black-ruby crooned, then cocked his head. Hey! I can't call you Adren forever. You need an
honorific.
Adren shook his
head. "I don't think so, Thahaeth. Adren will do just fine with me. I don't want
to change it."
Thahaeth snorted in reply. Nonsense! You're dragonrider folk now, you have to elide your
name. At his rider's silence,
the black-ruby rolled his eyes. Fine then, your name will be Ad'ren. The hatchling pronounced matter-of-factly.
His bond
laughed. "Oh really?" He asked, grinning.
Thahaeth snorted. Yes, now enough of that, Ad'ren. The hatchling said pointedly, and grabbed his rider's
arm in his mouth. Now come and feed me!
Adren, or Ad'ren, laughed and allowed the tiny
dragonet to lead him away.
From a short distance away, Cerid watched the two
as she sat beside a ruby-winged dragon with a sparkling white hide. Aspath
opened one whirling eye sleepily as Cerid snorted. They will be fine, rider mine. We all will.
Cerid turned her head to look at her dragon, acting
as if she had no idea what the white-ruby was talking about. "Why would I care
what happened to Adren, or that black-ruby nuisance of his?" She asked
indignantly.
The white-ruby gave no answers, however, and simply twitched her
tail as she slipped back into
sleep.
