A'ran and
Ceissa
"Got a seven?"
"No, go
fish"
Adiran and Ceissa had been at Falas Weyr for...well, a very long time
now, waiting for Niayith's clutch to hatch. And the best thing they could think
of to do to keep themselves entertained in their infrequent spare time was card
games.
The monotony was suddenly shattered when the queens began to roar, and
were quickly followed by the other dragons.
"Adiran? What's going on?" Ceissa
asked worriedly. "Is the clutch hatching?"
Adiran stared around him. "I don't
think so. I think something's happened."
"Lauer's going after another hold!"
They overheard someone shouting. They didn't have time to question further, the
black and green fire lizards on their owner's shoulders had began to hum as the
candidates were called to the sands.
Adiran and Ceissa glanced at each other
nervously as they slipped on their candidacy robes and joined the throng of
candidates around the eggs. Adiran noticed that the Weyrleaders were gone, but
just then the crowds went silent as the first egg cracked, revealing a deep
bronze muzzle.
Cheers arose as the bronze dragon emerged; a bronze hatching
first was said to be good luck. The bronze walked to a female candidate, who
wrapped the female dragon in a hug.
More eggs hatched at once, revealing a
white, a blue and two green dragons. Adiran watched the blue dragon curiously as
the white bonded and named himself Karith. Suddenly it seemed as though the
hatching was already half over, a good deal of the eggs had already hatched, and
the inhabitants were wandering the sands, looking for their bonds.
The two
greens had both bonded, but were stopped from leaving by the tiny gold dragon
Flynnth, who's rider explained that the candidates and new riders were to stay
in the hatching caverns while food was brought to them. Several candidates
muttered among themselves anxiously, then the blue that hatched prior to
Karith's Impression rushed to Adiran.
"Slow down, Onoeth! The world is not
ending!" Adi-A'ran now, laughed as he stroked the blue's neck
comfortingly.
The new bluerider shot an quick encouraging glance to Ceissa,
before joining the other new riders to feed his dragon. Ceissa bit her lip,
watching them leave, then turned back to the eggs. Several dragons had already
Impressed, including a blue-black and green-speckled blue female. A female blue
Impressed, followed by a couple of greens and bronzes, then a blue and
brown.
The gold dragon, Flynnth, bugled, ringing throughout the caverns, and
Niayith took up the cry. The hatchlings that still wandered the sands whimpered
in fear as several of the humans covered their ears.
Ceissa found A'ran
beside his blue hatchling, Onoeth, and raced towards him. "What
happened?"
"The new Lord Holder Lauer dueled with J'tha." A'ran explained.
Niayith stood up to leave as Flynnth took her place over the clutch. A'ran stood
beside her, frowning, as Onoeth ate. Then he glanced something behind Ceissa,
and started to grin.
Ceissa noticed his grin and glared. "What are you
smiling at?" She demanded.
"Look behind you." She did, and gasped as a green
dragon tried to hide behind the girl's legs.
I'm scared, Ceissa! What's going
on?
She gasped again,
stroking the shivering head reassuringly. "It's alright, Naith, it's going to be
fine." Even so, the greenrider had a hard time convincing her green dragon that
everything was going to be
alright.
