Telem raced to the Hatching Sands as soon as he heard the brown mother
bugling. He struggled to pull on one of the white candidate robes as he ran out
of the candidate barracks to the Sands where the eggs were furiously
rocking.
His marble fire lizard scolded him from behind as he flew after his
owner, rainbow eyes whirling. Telem ignored the half-grown fire lizard as he
entered the Hatching Sands.
The eggs were all rocking, though none had yet
cracked. Telem strode over to where the other candidates were standing, waiting
for the eggs to hatch. He'd already missed one chance to Impress. He was
determined to leave these sands today with a dragon.
He grinned as a weyrbrat
started shouting out something about Krispith wings. One of the brown dragons
stopped humming long enough to growl at the boy, but at that time the first egg
had cracked, revealing a large brown dragon. Telem watched as the brown blinked,
staring blearly at the candidates. He supposed there would be a lot of browns in
this clutch, considering both the parents were brown.
Telem stiffened as the
brown hatchling stumbled near him, but the brown dragon turned to another boy,
and crooned happily. Disappointed, Telem turned to see another egg shatter,
revealing a second brown. He caught a glimpse of someone in the stands standing
up in shock; he didn't see who it was, as the brown Impressed and was lead off
the sands.
Another egg burst, sending a green hatchling rolling. She only
stopped when she bumped into the dark claws of a huge, dragon-like figure, a
Dimer or something like that. The large dragon blinked down at the green,
blue-green eyes widening as the green spoke out loud!
Telem heard the sound
of an egg shattering behind him, and a third brown hatched, followed by a
bronze. He looked on enviously as the bronze dragon chose a boy from the
stands.
The next egg hatched into the first blue of the clutch, and the blue
dragons watching all drowned out the other dragons with their humming. The blue
hatchling streaked towards the candidates, his pale wings outstretched.
Telem
barely knew what was happening before the blue ran straight into him. Aeccestane
screeched from his shoulder as Telem wobbled, trying to keep his balance.
Sorry. I am Aseth. Are you all right?
Shocked, Telem mumbled an answer to the large blue. I am
hungry now. You know what it is like to be cramped up for a long time in a shell
that is almost too small for you? I see the food. I am really, really
hungry. The blue talked rapidly, his voice excited.
"Slow down
there a bit, Aseth, my head is whirling. I can’t understand you." But the blue
was not listening; he was streaking towards the food.
Faster, faster, hurry up, hurry up, Telem. Hurry, hurry, hurry!
There is food to be eaten and we should not waste it! At least, I should not
waste it. The blue was still talking rapidly. Telem sighed as he
followed the energetic little dragon of the sands. At least he'd never be bored,
with Aseth around.
