You don't want to stay here?
R'shi's green-brown eyes fluttered open as he looked
up at his dragon. The young man was leaning against the stone wall of their weyr
at Enzan Shi, arms folded across his chest as he tilted his head up to look at
the large brown. The young man smiled fondly up at the dragon as he reached out
with his hand to scratch Ujanforth's lowered head.
"Nah, I'd like to explore
other worlds, at least a bit, before we get tied down to one spot." The
twenty-one-turn-old explained patiently. "And I'd like to see Pern
again."
He had not seen the home of his birth in over two turns now, ever
since the fateful day that he had Impressed Ujanforth. The young man was drawn
out of his thoughts at his brown dragon's rumbling chuckles.
If you want to see the Old World,
ridermine, we can arrange that. In fact...Ujanforth's eyes whirled faster in excitement.
Why don't we go to
Dragonwillow Weyr?
R'shi
arched an eyebrow as he looked up at the brown curiously. "Why? What's so
special about there?"
There is a gold rising, named Quiranth.
R'shi rolled his eyes and
grinned. "I should have known..."
Ujanforth ignored his joking rider as he
continued. She is
the Weyrwoman's bond. He who catches her will be
Weyrleader.
R'shi arched an
eyebrow. The brown wanted to chase a senior queen. Did Ujanforth plan for him to
be a Weyrleader?
I am only a brown, but I believe that I can catch her.
And, I think you would be a good Weyrleader.
R'shi looked down, nervously running his hand
through his long, dark brown hair, currently tied back in a loose ponytail. "You
really think I'd be a good leader, Ujanforth?" He asked, hazel green eyes
looking up at his dragon.
Yes.
Ujanforth rumbled softly. And I think you would like Eilin, as well. They have no
Weyrleader right now; if nothing else, you can volunteer to help out, at least
until the flight, whether I win or lose.
R'shi thought it over briefly, but he made up his
mind quickly. He smiled and stroked the brown's snout. "Alright then. Let's go
to Dragonwillow, Ujanforth."
Ujanforth bugled happily, and R'shi laughed.
Three creeling fire lizards appeared in the air suddenly, two adults, one barely
full grown. R'shi smiled and reached out to his brown Quey, rubbing the flit's
head as he crooned. The other two, a white female and a grey male, watched from
where they stood perched on Ujanforth's back.
Walking inside his weyr, R'shi
strode over to his desk, and picked up a peice of hide. He wrote out a short
message on one side, and wrapped the hide around one of Quey's forelegs. With a
short whistle to the flit, he sent his pet off, who promptly disappeared
between.
"I've just sent Quey off with a message for the
Rurachi," He explained to his dragon. "Explaining that we're leaving for
Dragonwillow."
Ujanforth nodded. Let's go then! I want to see Pern, and Dragonwillow, and
Quiranth! The fire lizards
shrieked from his back as the brown pranced about in a circle excitedly.
R'shi had to hold a hand over his mouth to keep from laughing out loud.
"Hold on, you silly, wherry-brained dragon! I still have to get ready and
pack..."
Ujanforth shifted his bulk impatiently. Very well. He grumbled. But you'd better make it quick! His tail lashed back and forth furiously behind him as
he shifted anxiously again.
R'shi just shook his head and grinned at his
dragon's antics as he walked back to his weyr to get ready.
Two hours
later, R'shi had all his belongings packed and loaded on Ujanforth's back. Most
of that time was spent trying to keep his dragon still. The brown dragon was
skittish, flexing his wings and shifting his feet constantly, as he waited
impatiently for the signal to leave. "Hold still, Ujanforth!" R'shi growled at
the brown as he struggled to tighten his riding straps.
Ujanforth's eyes
whirled with apology. Sorry...He said, though his tail still twitched behind
him.
Finally, R'shi vaulted onto the brown's back, and sent his three fire
lizards ahead to the Weyr. The brown, white, and grey flits disappeared suddenly
as Ujanforth watched wistfully.
Can we leave now, R'shi? The brown exclaimed anxiously.
R'shi sighed. "Yes,
Ujanforth, it's time to go." He slapped the dragon's neck affectionately as
Ujanforth bugled joyfully.
We're leaving! We're going to Dragonwillow and we're
going to be Weyrleaders! The
brown bellowed as he took off.
R'shi blushed as several heads turned to stare
at them. "Ujanforth, keep it down, would you? Besides, it is by no means certain
that you'll win the flight, you haven't even met Quiranth
yet, for Faranth's sakes!"
Ujanforth twisted his head around to look at his
rider. Of course
I'll win. I have you for a rider, don't I? He went between, and
R'shi's breath caught in his throat before he could reply.
They reappeared
in a lush, green area on the southern continent. The blue watchdragon on the
heights bugled to them, and Ujanforth returned the greeting with a hearty,
overly-loud bugle of his own as R'shi winced. The brown was showing
off.
Ujanforth backwinged, coming to a stop in an area just outside of the
entrance to the interior of the Weyr. He lowered a forearm as R'shi stepped down
to the ground and looked around him. His eyes widened in surprise. "I've never
seen so much greenery in my life...at least, not on Pern, anyway." He supposed
they had lots of grubs here to protect the plantlife.
Ujanforth snorted.
Where's the feeding
grounds? Where's Quiranth? He
demanded as he studied all the dragons around him.
R'shi smiled sheepishly.
"Um, Ujanforth? Don't you think we should go tell the Weyrwoman why we're here,
before you go off chasing her queen?"
The brown cocked his head.
Huh. I suppose
so. He relented.
R'shi
sighed, running his hand through his hair nervously as he sought out someone to
ask directions from. He singled out a greenrider, and waved to her. "Hey! Excuse
me." He ran up to her as she stopped. Ujanforth eyed her dragon with interest,
and R'shi glanced up at him disapprovingly. You're chasing Quiranth, remember? The brown quickly fixed his attention back on his
rider.
"We just arrived here. Would you happen to know where we could find
the Weyrwoman's office?" R'shi asked the greenrider.
She smiled and pointed
towards the entrance. "Inside, down the middle right tunnel 'til you come to a
threeway fork, left, third room on the right."
R'shi nodded his thanks and
excused himself, hurrying towards the Weyr. "Come on, Ujanforth." Reluctantly,
the brown followed after his rider and plopped down outside the entrance. "Wait
here, it shouldn't take long." R'shi told him.
Ujanforth's attention was
drawn away as a brilliantly glowing golden dragoness appeared. She spread her
wings wide, letting the bright afternoon sunlight shine through the soft, pale
golden membranes as it made her bright golden hide shimmer. Ujanforth's eyes lit
up as she alighted by the edge of the lake, his eyes following her every
movement. She's even
lovelier than I imagined! He
said reverently. R'shi rolled his eyes. R'shi! Don't blow it with Eilin!
R'shi began to protest, but Ujanforth pushed him
into the entrance with his head, and he stumbled to keep from toppling to the
floor. Grumbling under his breath, he stalked off to find the Weyrwoman, to
volunteer to help out however needed until there was a new Weyrleader, and to
sign Ujanforth up for the flight...
